Leading 9-4, Miller allowed Cornell's Brian Realbuto to come back and tie the match and force OT, where Realbuto scored a takedown to win 11-9. However, after the match, Kent State wrestling coaches observed that Miller had not been rewarded his bonus point for having more than one minute of riding time against his opponent, which would have given him a 10-9 lead after three periods and the win.But NCAA officials told KSU head coach Jim Andrassy the video of the match cannot be reviewed once the match as ended, despite the hand signals of the official on the mat.
