Students paint SCCS into a corner on art room

SANDUSKY — Sandusky Central Catholic School will go back to the drawing board to consider saving decades of student artwork. In early May, the school announced it considered renovating a portion of the high school art room, adorned with year's worth of student art on the walls, into a normal classroom. Many current and former students expressed concern and outrage with the announcement on Facebook.It appears the school has now adjusted its position, according to a letter from the school president, Geoff Palmer, which posted Wednesday on the school's Facebook page."After meeting with several student groups, we have decided to delay this decision for a year," Palmer wrote. "In that time, we will work with our students and alumni to find a solution that addresses our space concerns and preserves the artwork and traditions we love. The key will be to find a long-term solution that helps SCCS manage its growth while providing every student the tools they need to succeed."Palmer said the school is proud of students for voicing their concerns "to be part of the solution.""I am so happy to say that our efforts have made an impact and the art rooms will remain how they are for at least another year while other options are reviewed," states a Facebook post from "SMCC Save The Art Room," a page created in opposition of the art room renovation. "I couldn't be happier. Thank you to everyone that wrote a letter, called the school, and stopped in. Not one person in particular, but all of us together as a Panther Family made this happen."Why did the school consider the art room renovation? The school needs more room for its preschool program and changes in "instructional delivery and programming," Palmer said.After taking four years of art, St. Mary Central Catholic High School seniors can paint small murals like these on the wall to leave their mark on the school. A Facebook page claims administrators want to cover up the artwork located in the back half of the art room to transform it into another classroom.
