What happened to the Lions Park beach? And why isn't there a beach in Sandusky?

If my memory serves me correctly, I recall there being a beach at Lions Park some decades ago. What happened to the beach? Andrew on 48th StreetSandusky Library special collections librarian Ron Davidson provided the following response:There was a brief article about the park published in the book, "From the Widow's Walk" (volume 1). The article was also published in the Register on Aug. 23, 1987.It was first opened as a private park, Winnebago Park, in 1912. It had a bathing beach, a band pavilion, and a dock for 50 boats.By 1915 it had a merry-go-round and a playground, as well as a dance hall.The property went through a few owners between 1912 and 1927. The last private owner, George Eger, bought it in 1927, and shortly thereafter deeded it to the Lions Club.The Lions Club almost immediately donated it to the city, although the transfer apparently wasn't formalized until 1931.According to the article, "The land was never to be used except for a bathing beach and a permanent public park." I haven't seen any information on when the beach was removed, however.City officials have not had any recent public talks about reintroducing a beach in Sandusky.
