SWAT sent to Vermilion home after shots fired

VERMILION — SWAT officers descended on a Vermilion home Thursday after gunshots came from inside the residence while police were at the scene. Nobody was hurt, and an armed suspect surrendered.Vermilion police responded to the 500 block of Highbridge Road at about 9:15 p.m. for a report of a man who was possibly suicidal, according to a Vermilion police report.Officers arrived at the home and knocked on the door, but received no answer, the report states. Police then heard a "muffled pop" inside the home and then louder pops, determined to be gunshots, come out of the house from inside.Multiple officers reported hearing bullets "whiz" through the air by them, and officers then ran for cover and set up a perimeter around the home, according to the report. SWAT officers from Lorain County arrived to assist.At about 10:45 p.m., the suspect, identified as 44-year-old Josiah Poore, emerged from the home unarmed and with his hands raised, the report states. Police arrested Poore at gunpoint.Officers examined the scene and found what appeared to be bullet holes in roof shingles where the shots apparently exited the home, according to the report.
