Man sues over sexual assault

green@oc-register.comA male inmate is suing the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office after he was allegedly raped two weeks ago.His attorney Amanda Krzystan said the alleged incident would not have occurred without the jail's "antiquated policies and procedures."He was allegedly raped by a male inmate in the jail's library."When you lock two inmates in an area without supervision or surveillance, something is going to happen," Krzystan said Thursday.She said jail staff failed to protect him.It is an inappropriate journalism practice for the newspaper to name alleged victims of sexual assault.Sheriff Steve Levorchick said the alleged incident has been under investigation since it was reported, but not because of anything his staff did or did not do.Levorchick said his staff acted appropriately and that the lawsuit is illegitimate."In the end the truth will come out," Levorchick said.He declined to comment further, citing the ongoing nature of the probe.Krzystan and her client allege Levorchick and his staff not only failed to protect him, but also that they did not offer adequate medical treatment afterwards."He did not receive medical treatment or an assessment or anything until days after he reported it," Krzystan said. "How they handled it should have been handled differently."She said her client is seeking an undefined monetary amount."He feels you can't put an amount on a sexual assault," Krzystan said.
