Woody's Boathouse & Gifts offers a unique experience

topey@sanduskyregister.comNot to many businesses are also a destination spot to see the memorabilia housed inside.Even fewer have a gorgeous 30' prototype wooden boat in the center of it all."People usually say 'Wooo' or 'Wow' when they see it," said Sherianne Stacy, who co-owns Woody's Boathouse & Gifts with her husband Dennis.Woody's is a nautical inspired gift shop but not everything is nautical. They have specifically chosen items to meet any price range, there are even items for kids or go all out to treat yourself.And in the middle of it all is Go Ballistic, a red boat with warm Mahogany wood that was built by her father Howard Schneider- who was an engineer."The first thing men do is go up the steps," she said of male visitors who enter the shop. The first thing they do is check out the boat.There are also old boat builder ads and newspaper stories hanging on the walls, including some from former local builders.The welcoming couple want people to feel comfortable to come in just to look around at the history in the shop and chat. There is even a sitting area where someone can lounge and read the magazines and books on ship building.There is plenty to see in the shop, but also plenty to buy.The Stacy's have a couple smaller portholes from the local ship wreck Success, an Australian prison ship, which lay in the waters of the public beach in Port Clinton.An old wood model Schooner handmade in the early 1900's is priced at $250. A smaller boat handmade of birch wood is tagged at $178.There are several taxidermy animals in the shop, including a lifelike and beautiful coyote.The couple, who both grew up on the water, opened the shop August 21.They are teachers who retired from the Archbold school district.The business started as a concept for a pole barn to store the 30' boat. Then they started to talk about a desire to open up a business, maybe a nautical business.They built a building that would combine the two with shiplap board and Catawba stone into the exterior. The same is featured inside at the check out."Our friends looked at us like 'Are you nuts starting over at your age?'" Sherrianne said.With their sense of life on the water maybe they are as smart as a coyote.Woody's Boathouse & Gifts40 N.
