Jayda Jackson tells her story

Jayda Jackson, 16, a Sandusky High School student who says she endured racial discrimination from students and teachers alike at Bellevue Schools, shared her story Monday on "Between the Lines."Sandusky NAACP president Jim Jackson joined Jayda for a portion of her interview.A teary-eyed Jayda recalled the prejudice she experienced at Bellevue's middle and high schools, which eventually forced her family to relocate to Sandusky.The alleged mistreatment — including racial slurs, unfair punishments, an unjustified drug search and commands to restrict her natural hair or move to the back of school assemblies — endured three years.Eventually, Jayda and her older sister Shania, 18, transferred schools. Her family filed a racial discrimination lawsuit, and lawyers from both parties recently reached a financial settlement.Read more about Jayda HERE.On Monday, Jackson linked Jayda's alleged mistreatment to her desires to challenge the status quo of racial stereotypes, which persist nationwide.She excelled in class. She strove to impress her teachers. And if she felt mistreated during the process, or unfairly judged for being biracial, she spoke out. "I felt like they hated I was smart," Jayda said. "They hated the fact I wanted to be good. I wasn't supposed to be a great person."Jackson said her assumptions are spot-on."They look at it differently because of your race," he told her. "They think 'I dare you to challenge me, and I will make you pay for challenging me.'"When contacted in August, Bellevue Schools superintendent Kim Schubert said no wrongdoing occurred within her district.Jackson urged Bellevue Schools officials to re-examine their behavior and realize simply claiming an environment isn't racist doesn't mean it's fact."School systems are just like individuals," Jackson said. "If you talked to everyone in that system, none of them, no matter how much evidence you produce, would say they're racist."Jackson praised Jayda for her desire to spark change. Although her family didn't win their suit, in Jayda's mind, she's secured a much more important victory by increasing awareness of race-related issues."At first, I regretted settling the lawsuit," Jayda said after Monday's program. "But now that I've had a chance to tell what happened, I take those feelings back. This is all I wanted."Watch the first segment of the program in the player below.
