Brass Pelican hosts benefit

widman@sanduskyregister.comAs a former Sandusky High School football star, Bruce Parker understands the importance of team support.This weekend, Parker's family hopes to rally some of his fans together for a worthy cause.On Saturday at the Brass Pelican, they'll collect funds for Parker as he recovers from severe injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash earlier this year.The event is 2-6 p.m., and guests can enjoy all-you-can eat wings and soft drinks for $20. Anyone can attend.All proceeds will benefit Parker and his family as they pay for his medical expenses."We're overwhelmed by the support," said Brooke McCarty, Parker's sister. "We're just so thankful for everyone who put this together to help as he recovers."In May, Parker, 25, lost control of his motorcycle while driving on River Road in Milan Township.He suffered critical injuries and was hospitalized throughout the summer.Many didn't think he'd survive.Just recently, he defied the odds and returned to Sandusky to begin outpatient rehabilitation, McCarty said."He's recovering, and happy to be home," McCarty said. Gina Peterson, an aunt of Parker's girlfriend, created a fundraiser page for Parker at gofundme.com this summer. As of Thursday, it had collected $790.Many in Sandusky know Parker from his success as a Sandusky High School football player. He graduated in 2008 and went on to play football at Urbana University.
