Vermilion Schools' vital levy approved

VERMILION — Voters in the Vermilion Schools district approved a five-year operating levy renewal on Election Day, preserving approximately $4.25 million in annual funding and avoiding a series of proposed cuts to staffing, transportation and extracurricular activities. The 6.03-mill renewal received about 72% support, according to unofficial results from the Erie and Lorain county boards of elections. The renewal continues an existing property tax that accounts for approximately 16% of the district's operating revenue. It supports everyday expenses, including teachers, classroom instruction and student services. Renewal avoids major reductionsSuperintendent Wes Weaver previously outlined significant reductions that administrators would recommend if the levy failed. Those proposals included eliminating 39 positions, representing approximately 18% of the district's workforce, in addition to 16 positions already eliminated or left unfilled during the previous two years. The district also faced the possible elimination of all extracurricular activities, including athletics, clubs and other student programs. Transportation reductions would have eliminated six bus routes, ended high school busing and increased the minimum distance for transportation eligibility from 1 mile to 2 miles. Academic programs, including art, music, agriculture, STEM and advanced courses, also faced potential reductions. Approval of the levy avoids the immediate funding loss that prompted those recommendations. However, district officials have cautioned that financial pressures will continue. Financial challenges remainDistrict treasurer Justin Klingshirn previously estimated that failure of the levy would reduce revenue by about $2.1 million in the first year, followed by the full $4.25 million annually. Without significant spending reductions, officials warned that the district could exhaust its financial reserves by the end of 2028. The district already reduced expenses by approximately $1.6 million as it prepared for changes in state funding and property tax laws. The renewal does not request additional funding. According to the ballot calculation, it will cost approximately $185 annually for each $100,000 of home value. District officials previously explained that changes in state law are expected to reduce the amount homeowners pay toward the levy compared with the existing tax. The renewal will continue for five years, with collections beginning in 2027.
