Sandusky routs Norwalk for 1st win

SANDUSKY — Norwalk's Brysen Risner returned the opening kickoff 60 yards. Sandusky fumbled on its first play from scrimmage. Advantage Truckers, right? Wrong. Sandusky's running game met little resistance Friday at Strobel Field and the Blue Streaks routed Norwalk 52-6. Daviyon Jackson ran for 165 yards in the second quarter alone as Sandusky finally broke through for its first win of the season. "Big relief. Just happy for the kids," Sandusky coach Jamaris Brown said. "We've been wanting them to have success all season long. The coaching staff and kids have been holding in there, so a big relief for us." Sandusky finished the game — played in some rain and a stiff wind — with 447 yards and limited Norwalk (0-9) to 53. Jackson finished the night with 10 carries for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Raymond Peake added 89 yards and a touchdown and Zion Henlon had 78 rushing yards and a touchdown. After Risner's nice return to start the game, Norwalk went four-and-out. The Truckers, who haven't scored in the first quarter all season, got another chance when Sandusky fumbled but couldn't score. The Streaks' charitable mood changed quickly. Peake ran for 55 yards and Jackson scored on a six-yard run. Norwalk put together an 11-play drive, but had to punt. The snap sailed over Brady Singer's head and Sandusky took over on the Norwalk 36-yard line. Louis Johnson scored on a five-yard run four plays later to make it 14-0. Henlon scored on a 43-yard run on the Streaks' next possession and Sandusky's defensive leader Terrance Randleman wrecked Norwalk's next drive when he recovered a fumble near the goal line and fell into the end zone. Jackson topped off Sandusky's 33-point second quarter with touchdown runs of 56 and 79 yards. "That first half I can't think of any miscues besides the fumble," Brown said. "We were doing a pretty good job of taking care of the mistakes. The kids did what we asked them to do tonight." Terrell Ruiz and Ruby Capizzi were named homecoming king and queen at halftime and the second half went by fast due to the running clock. Norwalk got on the board in the fourth quarter when a Henlon pass that wasn't caught was ruled a lateral. It was returned 21 yards by Singer. Three plays later Cam Evans scored on a seven-yard run. The Streaks scored twice in the second half. Raymond Peake had a 21-yard touchdown run before Kaden Peake scored on a 17-yard run in the final seconds. Sandusky has won four of last five against Norwalk. Both programs have struggled in recent years, a far cry from 2019 when the Blue Streaks defeated the Truckers in a regional semifinal in Bellevue that featured plenty of talent. Since then, Norwalk has one winning season (5-4 in 2020) and has endured six straight losing seasons. The Truckers are 9-51 since 2021. Sandusky has fared a little better. The Streaks have had two winning seasons since 2019 and have one playoff win (in 2024). Norwalk finishes its season next week at home against Clyde (3-6). Sandusky will finish its season next week at Port Clinton (7-2). "We want to send our seniors out the right way and help the younger guys get better," Brown said.
