Community mourns Margaretta student

CASTALIA — A Margaretta Schools student died in what law enforcement described as a tragic accident after the district's homecoming. The crash, which involved a utility terrain vehicle, occurred in the 1100 block of Martins Point Road at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the Erie County Sheriff's Office. While driving on private property, the UTV struck a tree. The driver was ejected and another passenger was able to jump off. The driver, Jaden Acheson, 16, of Castalia, suffered injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Erie County Sheriff Paul Sigsworth said there was no indication of impairment evident to deputies. "Our agency's condolences are extended to Jaden's family and friends during this very difficult time," Sigsworth said. "This is a terrible tragedy." Sigsworth said his agency had conversations with Margaretta Schools' administrators and that the district would make grief counselors available to students this week. Sigsworth added that there was a separate, unrelated injury crash involving a UTV around 4:45 p.m. Saturday on private property off Bardshar Road in Margaretta Township. Memorial planned Castalia's Cold Creek Coffee Co., 119 Main St., Castalia, said it would open at 5 p.m. Sunday for a remembrance of life for Acheson. Students who attend will be offered free drinks, and Winnie the therapy dog will also attend. "We will be open at 5 p.m. for students to gather as our community processes this loss," the company posted. "Our hearts break for Julie, Mariah and family." Fundraiser established A fundraiser, titled In Loving Memory of Jaden Acheson on gofundme.com, seeks to provide the family with financial support.
