PREP ROUNDUP: SMCC tennis advances to district final

TOLEDO — St. Mary Central Catholic's tennis team advanced to the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association tournament district finals with a 3-2 win Tuesday at Maumee Valley Country Day. The Panthers and Hawks were tied 2-2 with 2nd doubles still playing. SMCC got a 7-5, 6-1 win from Grace Will and Serissa Dante to clinch the victory. "We were down 5-4 (in the first set) but they played really well," SMCC coach Daniel Miller said. "In their second set, I would guess that five out of the seven games went to deuce. "Two sophomores who had a really big offseason. They play well together — one is a righty (Will) and one is a lefty (Dante). They've had some really nice wins and are playing some real good tennis." Will and Dante have a 16-2 record this season. SMCC also won a pair of straight-set matches at No. 2 singles (Rae Roth) and No. 3 singles (Caitlyn Collins). Roth is 21-0 this season while Collins is 19-2. "We showed our depth today," Miller said. "I love the competitive spirit of this group. They definitely don't shy away from a challenge." SMCC, which improved to 17-2 this season, advances to the Northwest District final of the OTCA tourney next Tuesday at Lima Shawnee. The winner advances to the state semifinals. "It's going to be a test," Miller said. "It feels good to be in the top eight in the state and we have an opportunity to play another quality opponent." Singles: Valentina Buchkova (MVCD) def.
