Couple allegedly scams water park in Sandusky

SANDUSKY — Authorities booked a couple from Memphis, Tenn., into the Erie County jail on a host of offenses related to forgery, fraud, theft and more.At about 12:45 p.m. Friday, Sandusky police officers arrived at Castaway Bay on Cleveland Road (U.S. 6) for a suspicious credit card activity complaint.Upon processing a transaction for a food order, an employee noticed the numbers scanning in the system didn't match the card's numbers. Furthermore, the numbers returned to a Discover Card. The actual card used was a MasterCard.A manager provided a description of a man and woman who allegedly committed the offense. Officers eventually tracked down the two, who allegedly failed to follow several commands. For instance, according to a police report:• The man, Brendan Durr, 23, provided police with a fake identity and stalled for more than an hour before providing officers with the real identification of who he really was.• The woman, Brya Echols, 23, repeatedly tried opening a car door and reached inside her purse when officers told her to stop multiple times.Inside the vehicle, which belonged to Durr, officers found about $1,300 in cash, a loaded gun and numerous pre-paid credit cards, several receipts and other similar cards, "which can be associated with credit card fraud," the report stated. "Several of the credit cards were found to have the name 'Brendan Durr,' and the male (told officers his name was) 'Jaelyn Byrd.' This also is another association with credit card fraud."Employees provided police with photocopies of fraudulent transactions they allegedly made at Castaway Bay: $63 for food, $93 for merchandise and $384 for a hotel room.Officers arrested the two and transported them to the Erie County jail. The jail lists Durr as residing in Sandusky on Camp Street.Among the charges each faces:• Durr: carrying a concealed weapon, a fourth-degree felony; three-count forgery, fifth-degree felonies; three-count theft, misdemeanors; two-count identify fraud, fifth-degree felonies; and obstructing official business, a misdemeanor.• Echols: three-count complicity to forgery, fifth-degree felonies; and three-count complicity to theft, a misdemeanorAs of late Sunday, each remained locked up on a no bond order.Reach reporter Andy Ouriel at ouriel@sanduskyregister.com and follow him on Twitter @AndyOuriel.Brendan D.
