Puppy gets agitated; attacks owner

Barb Kerbel was taken by ambulance to Fremont Memorial Hospital shortly after 9 p.m., when her 17-week-old dog, Kane, attacked her. She suffered injuries to her hands and leg, as well as a bite wound to her wrist, which will require surgery, according to a deputy's report. Deputies were dispatched to the home, in the 3700 block of County Road 56, after Kerbel's husband, Phil, called 911. By the time deputies arrived, paramedics had already loaded Barb into an ambulance headed for the hospital. Deputy Eric Arquette spotted the dog tethered in the yard.The dog appeared agitated, and it cowered while barking at the deputy.Arquette then went inside the home, finding a large amount of blood across the kitchen floor, the report said. Phil Kerbel later told deputies he and his wife bought the dog in Fostoria about three weeks ago.He said when his wife tried to put the dog outside Sunday evening, a cat zipped through the kitchen and ran out the door, triggering the dog's excitement.The German Shepherd then spiraled out of control, attacking Barb as she screamed for her husband's help.Phil told deputies he plans to call the Sandusky County Dog Warden this week to discuss the matter. On Monday, Paul Kerbel — Barb's father-in-law — said Barb is doing OK and recovering. The family is still trying to figure out what to do with the dog.
