Seahawks have confidence in Lock's ability

SEATTLE — With Sam Darnold out because of a glute injury, the Seattle Seahawks don't expect all that much to change now that Drew Lock is taking over. Lock will start at quarterback Sunday for the Super Bowl champions at Arizona, with Jalen Milroe in the backup role. "Drew's a proven really good player in this league, and when he's started, he's played really good football, and then when he's been on our team since I've seen him play in person, he's a heck of a player here," coach Mike Macdonald said Wednesday. "So he's a heck of a guy, heck of a teammate. He's got a great balance about him of being like a true professional, but also he's a loose and focused guy." The Seahawks announced this week that Darnold has a "very unique, soft tissue" glute injury. Although the injury is believed to be short-term, there is no timetable for his return. Darnold was not placed on injured reserve. Darnold was injured when he was sacked by Dre'Mont Jones on Seattle's first series against the New England Patriots last week. Lock replaced him and went 16 of 22 for 187 yards and a touchdown as the Seahawks rallied for a 13-10 victory. Burrow limited at Bengals practice CINCINNATI — Joe Burrow has been listed as a limited participant in the Cincinnati Bengals' practice because of back tightness. The quarterback says the soreness shouldn't affect his play against Houston on Sunday. He mentioned getting plenty of mental reps, which might continue through Thursday and Friday. Burrow completed 25 of 35 passes for 254 yards with a touchdown and interception in last Sunday's win over Tampa Bay. He couldn't pinpoint when the injury occurred, noting it started after the game. Miller, Mahogany out for Lions DETROIT — The Detroit Lions will be without two starting offensive linemen against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday. Detroit has ruled out rookie offensive tackle Blake Miller and guard Christian Mahogany with injuries. Cornerback D.J. Reed was questionable on the injury report Wednesday. Miller was drafted No. 17 overall after not missing a game at Clemson. He played through a knee injury during his NFL debut in an overtime win over New Orleans on Sunday. Mahogany was hurt early in the game against the Saints. The Lions have veterans to fill in for Miller and Mahogany with Larry Borom and Ben Bartch. Murray questionable, Mason out for Minnesota EAGAN, Minn. — Kyler Murray was well enough to join the Minnesota Vikings for practice on a limited basis to leave open the possibility he could progress through the NFL concussion protocol to play this week at Chicago. The Vikings will be without leading rusher Jordan Mason for at least four weeks with a broken thumb he suffered in the season opener. Murray left that game against Green Bay after an illegal hit to the head at the end of a run. The Vikings prefer to decide their quarterback by Friday. Carson Wentz would play if Murray is not medically cleared in time. Atlanta not ready to name starting QB FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski says he's not ready to announce a starting quarterback for Sunday's home opener against Carolina. Cooper Rush's one-week hold on the job is in jeopardy. Michael Penix Jr. may be close to reclaiming his role as the starter, especially since Tua Tagovailoa was kept out Wednesday after leaving practice last week with an oblique injury. Rush started in the Falcons' 20-13 opening loss at Pittsburgh as Penix and Tagovailoa were inactive. Rookie Jack Strand was the backup but did not play. Rush threw two interceptions, including T.J. Watt's pick-6 in the fourth quarter. Fitzpatrick, Cooper Jr. questionable for Jets FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. did not practice because of injuries and coach Aaron Glenn says both are "week to week." Fitzpatrick injured his groin during the Jets' season-opening win at Tennessee last Sunday, while Cooper left with an ankle injury. Glenn said neither is currently a candidate for short-term injured reserve. Edge rusher Joseph Ossai and running back Kene Nwangwu will also be evaluated weekly. Stribling out about 10 weeks for 49ers SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling is expected to miss at least two months after undergoing surgery on his injured left ankle. Stribling got hurt in the season opener last week against the Los Angeles Rams and coach Kyle Shanahan said that he opted for surgery. Shanahan said he expected Stribling to miss about 10 weeks. The 49ers also placed backup tight end Jake Tonges on injured reserve with a knee injury. He will miss at least four weeks. Tonges had 34 catches for 293 yards and five touchdowns last season.
