Police: 2 students make threats at school

VERMILION — Vermilion police recently charged two middle school students after they both allegedly made verbal threats against the district.Both incidents occurred at Sailorway Middle School, on Sailorway Drive, and both students involved were younger than 13.The first incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 27. A teacher told the assistant principal one of their students stood up during class and allegedly said "you are going to die today," according to a Vermilion police report.The assistant principal called Vermilion police, which arrived and spoke with the student.The student said the comment was made after someone threw a piece of paper, which hit them in the head, the report stated. The student was bullied in the past, according to the report. On March 1, another student allegedly made a threat inside the school. A student walked in the hallway when someone allegedly heard them say "Oh my God. I hate everyone. I just want to bomb this hallway," according to another police report.Officers spoke with the student, who said that they were joking, the report stated.Vermilion police Chief Chris Hartung said his department's handling of school threats has "remained consistent" since the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in Colorado. "The message remains the same: There simply is no tolerance for school violence and all threats, supported or unsupported, will be fully vetted by all available resources," Hartung said.
