Tesla pursuit suspect indicted

SANDUSKY — A Columbus man accused of fleeing from law enforcement after going more than 100 mph in a Tesla was recently indicted. Dshawn McGlown, 22, of the 3100 block of Medina Ave., is facing two counts of failure to comply with a signal or order of a police officer, both of which are third-degree felonies. Just before 1 a.m. on July 11, the Erie County Sheriff's Office was made aware that a state trooper was attempting to stop a Tesla that was northbound on Milan Road (U.S. 250). The trooper reportedly clocked the vehicle at 134 mph in a 70-mph zone on the Ohio Turnpike east of the Milan Road (U.S. 250) exit, according to Lt. Erica Gockstetter of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The vehicle entered the Kalahari resort parking lot in an alleged attempt to evade troopers. It then re-entered Milan Road and eventually made it to eastbound Bogart Road, where deputies and troopers lost sight of it, according to a sheriff's office report. A call was then placed to neighboring jurisdictions to be on the lookout for the vehicle, a dark Tesla without any lights activated. Deputies estimated it was traveling in excess of 100 mph during their portion of the pursuit. Huron police officers then spotted the Tesla in their jurisdiction and began a pursuit, according to a Huron police report. Officers tailed the vehicle from Bogart Road to Main Street to Cleveland Road. With excessive speeds reported, officers backed off but were able to keep sight of the vehicle. The Tesla eventually turned into the Huron Green development. Officers knew there was only one exit, so one monitored it while another patrolled the park looking for the Tesla. He found it in the 500 block of Snowy Egret Drive, but the driver was not with it. Erie County deputies deployed K-9 Xena to track the driver. They also used the department's drone. They were unable to locate the driver. Kalahari security officers reviewed surveillance footage and found the vehicle leaving their parking lot just after 9 p.m. They backtracked the two people who entered the Tesla to a room number and found the room was registered to McGlown. Just before 6 a.m. on Saturday, Kalahari security reported that McGlown returned to the resort and departed southbound on Milan Road in a Toyota SUV. Deputies initiated a traffic stop near the turnpike and identified McGlown as the front-seat passenger. He was removed from the SUV and handcuffed. The driver told deputies that McGlown called her while she was in Columbus and told her to quickly come and pick him up, according to a supplemental Erie County Sheriff's Office report. McGlown reportedly told the woman he was located near the Huron Green development.
