FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Margaretta beats Brookside, 58-48

BROOKSIDE — The Margaretta football team won a shootout, defeating Brookside 58-48 on Friday in non-league action. The Polar Bears (2-1) led 23-19 after one quarter and 37-33 at halftime. Margaretta returns home Friday to take on Huron (0-3). Edison (1-2) trailed 6-0 after one quarter, but outscored the Spartans 22-0 the rest of the game. The Chargers host Northwood (2-1) on Friday. Edison 0 9 6 7 — 22 Start 6 0 0 0 — 6 Vermilion 42, Lorain Clearview 0 LORAIN — The Sailors used a huge first quarter to win its second straight game. Vermilion (2-1) raced out to a 28-0 advantage in the first quarter. The Sailors led 13-0 less than a minute into the game. Vermilion hosts Elyria Catholic (1-2) on Friday. Vermilion 28 7 7 0 — 42 Lorain Clearview 0 0 0 0 — 0 Ashland 21, Clyde 19 ASHLAND — Clyde's Dekin Crockett reeled in a nine-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining, but Ashland thwarted the Fliers on the ensuing two-point conversion attempt. Clyde (1-2) trailed 7-6 at halftime after Justin Kofron scored on a 10-yard run with less than a minute left in the second quarter. The Fliers then took a 13-7 lead on Grady Binder's two-yard dive and Mitch Newsome's extra point with 10:08 left in the third quarter. The Arrows inched ahead 14-13 nearly seven minutes later on when Carson Graber plowed in from the 2. Graber's one-yard plunge with 3:18 left in the fourth quarter and Layton Roop's ensuing extra point kick put Ashland up 21-13. It stayed that way until Crockett's touchdown reception late. Ashland opened the scoring in the first quarter on Liam Hubacher's 67-yard pass to Killian O'Brien. The Fliers hosts Bedford, Michigan (2-0) on Friday. Mansfield Madison 42, Norwalk 7 MADISON TWP. — The Truckers were unable to keep up in the non-league loss. "We came out fast and I thought our offense moved the ball at times with Austin (Gentry) at quarterback," Norwalk coach Keith Mora said. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but Madison got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter. Daniel Norris capped a scoring drive with an eight-yard touchdown catch from Carson Cook. The extra point put the Rams up 7-0 with 10:30 left in the first half. Madison then added a touchdown on its next possession when Damarrion Lloyd scored on a 17-yard run with 6:01 left in the first half. The backbreaker came just before halftime. The Truckers (0-3) were faced with fourth-and-5 at their own 46 with just under three minutes left in the half. After punting, Norwalk was unable to keep Madison off the scoreboard one more time in the half. Instead, Lloyd got free on a 65-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0 with just 46 seconds left in the first half. Trailing 28-0, the Truckers got on the scoreboard when Ayden-Hudson Brown scored on a 65-yard run at the 5:26 mark of the third quarter. But shortly after, Lloyd ripped off another long run. This time, a 78-yard touchdown run with 2:54 left in the third extended the Madison lead to 35-7. The Rams closed out the scoring with 10:30 left in the game when Lloyd scored his fourth touchdown of the game. This time it was an 18-yard run that made it 42-7. "Lyric (Shipp) had some explosive runs early and we just couldn't find ways to keep the chains moving," Mora said. "Ayden had some big runs as well and the lone touchdown. "I thought defensively we also came out strong and forced them to punt on their first three drives. Our defense tackled well and covered well early on. I was also proud of our special teams tonight. We had no issues with the snap on punts and we defended well on kickoffs." Hudson-Brown totaled 116 yards on seven attempts for the Truckers. Shipp added 100 yards on 19 attempts. Gentry was 3-of-7 passing for 18 yards, including Caiden Wilson catching two passes for 17 yards. It gets no easier for the Truckers, who host longtime rival Bellevue (2-1) on Friday at Contractors Stadium. "We wore out," Mora said. "We have to find ways to rotate certain guys and still make sure we are giving ourselves the best chance to be successful." Danville 38, Monroeville 0 MONROEVILLE — The Eagles are still searching for their first win of the season after the non-league loss. Danville threw five touchdown passes after a scoreless first quarter, dropping Monroeville to 0-3 this season. Danville broke through after Monroeville (0-3) missed a field goal early in the second quarter. Quarterback Parker Proper, on the second play of the ensuing drive, connected with Brycen Burke on a 49-yard touchdown pass. Proper ran in the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead. The Blue Devils forced the Eagles off the field in three plays on the next possession, and the punt didn't go far. With the short field, Danville added to its lead. Aidan Mickly was open to catch the five-yard touchdown pass from Proper, and despite the run for two points coming up short, it was already 14-0 for the visitors. A fumble in the end zone by Monroeville let Danville keep the game in control. A 43-yard run by Cyren Wallace propelled the Blue Devils to another trip to the red zone. That led to Proper connecting with Wallace for the two-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 22-0, which is where the game stood at halftime. The Eagles' struggles continued in the second half. They fumbled on the opening kickoff of the second half to gift the Blue Devils (3-0) another short field. Danville was able to punch it in with just one play, on the Proper 36-yard touchdown pass to Mickly to make it 30-0. Danville capped off the shutout with one last score in the third quarter. Briggs Wallace caught Proper's fifth touchdown pass from five yards out, and he also scored on the two-point conversion run to make it 38-0. Monroeville head coach Tylor Nester was frustrated with the result. But he knows his team is playing through the pain with some of their key starters out. "It's always next man up; in some situations we did a really good job, and in some situations we need to improve," Nester said. "The biggest thing is we need to take care of the football. It seems like each week we're getting closer and closer, but not there yet." Danville was a tough task going into the game, and Nestor was aware of the strong history of their program. "Hats off to Danville; they made the trip up here, and Coach (Matt) Blum does a heck of a job," he said. "They played physically tonight, and they played strong football." Every week Nestor gives his players words of the week. He spoke about how this week's words were "mental toughness" and why that's important moving forward — and not just for this week. "This is a life lesson, because sometimes you're going to be in the fire, right? You're going to be knocked down," said Nester. "It's how you respond, how you learn the lessons from the previous week. "We talked in our huddle. There are some bright spots there. The scoreboard doesn't show it, but we'll continue to work, and that's kind of our motto. Get back to work, and be ready to go for next week." The Eagles turn the page to Firelands Conference play, where they have won the past two titles. Monroeville hosts South Central (1-2) on Friday. Genoa 48, Huron 20 GENOA — The Tigers dropped to 0-3 with the non-league road loss. Robert Fisher completed 12 of 22 passes for 101 yards and three interceptions for Huron. He ran 11 times for 99 yards and a touchdown. Chris Viviano added 20 carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers. Grant Periat caught five passes for 56 yards.
