Ross blasts Sandusky for 6th straight win in series

FREMONT — Fremont Ross had the running clock going at the start of the second half. That's what kind of night it was for Sandusky. The Little Giants once again cast a menacing shadow over the scuffling Blue Streaks, cruising to a 51-6 win Friday at Don Paul Stadium. It was Ross' sixth straight win in the second-oldest football rivalry in the state of Ohio. The average score over those games has been 38.3 to 14.6. This edition between the two Division II programs was close for one quarter before Sandusky had a disastrous second period. The Blue Streaks turned the football over twice in the second quarter and also snapped the ball over their punter's head, giving Ross first-and-goal. The second period began with a defensive pass interference call on the visitors and ended with a 25-yard field goal by Carson Lewis that gave Ross a comfortable 30-0 lead midway through the game. Ross struck first when quarterback Braylen Garza capped a seven-play, 66-yard drive by finding speedy Mason Englund in the left flat. Englund weaved his way for an 18-yard touchdown. Sandusky converted on fourth-and-2 from the Ross 41-yard line when Zion Henlon hit Denarea Swain for an 18-yard gain in the right flat, but the promising drive ended on the Ross 17. The Little Giants went 83 yards and benefited from two defensive pass interference calls. Ben Waggoner scored on a 15-yard run to make it 13-0. Sandusky's Daviyon Jackson fumbled on the next series after catching a screen pass, setting up Ross on its own 49. Garza immediately hit Marcus Lewis on a 51-yard touchdown pass. After the high punt snap, Garza faked a handoff and walked in for a seven-yard touchdown. The high snap came after Henlon gained 11 yards on third-and-15. Sandusky faced third-and-10 before a costly delay of game penalty. Englund intercepted Henlon on Sandusky's next possession. That set up Lewis' field goal with six seconds on the first-half clock. Sandusky ran the ball 23 times in the first half for 79 yards. Henlon carried 11 times for 40 yards in the first two quarters. His first pass was Sandusky's biggest play. Henlon found Terrance Randleman open for a 34-yard gain. The second half was played entirely under a running clock. Waggoner ripped off a 57-yard run before scoring from four yards out. Sandusky's third turnover set up Ross' next score. Raylen Roberts, who carried four times for 35 yards in the third quarter, almost had a touchdown, but fumbled into the end zone. It was recovered by Ross' Konnor Frasure for a 44-0 lead. Sandusky scored its only points on the next drive, which was kick-started by a 28-yard pass play from Henlon to Isaiah Johnson. Henlon scored on a seven-yard run with 6:50 to play. England capped the scoring by returning the ensuing kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown. Sandusky finished with 216 total yards. Henlon threw for 116 yards. Ross, which didn't run an offensive play in the fourth quarter because of the running clock, rushed for 208 yards on 20 carries and Garza threw for 81 yards. Waggoner led all rushers with 113 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Sandusky (0-2) has a tough assignment next Friday when the Streaks play Division I power Canton McKinley at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton. The game is part of a celebration of Ohio's Pro Football Hall of Fame members. Blue Streaks legend Orlando Pace was inducted into the hall in 2016. The Little Giants, who forfeited a win against Tiffin Columbian last week, will take a 1-1 record into a home game next week against Perrysburg.
