Edison girls finish 3rd at home golf Invitational

HURON — Shayne Fischer emphasizes that every shot matters. The Edison girls golf coach knows every golfer would like to have a couple shots back. The Chargers just missed finishing runner-up at Wednesday's Edison Invitational at the Thunderbird Hills South golf course. Edison shot a team total of 349 while Avon Lake was runner-up with a 348. Avon won the team championship with a total of 337. "I was really impressed with a lot of the girls from all of the schools," Fischer said. "I thought the scores today were really good, both individually and team-wise. I was really happy with our team score and we were missing one of our girls. I'm super happy of that." Annabelle Seville was runner-up for individuals with a round of 73. Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic's Ryan Dickman won with a 72. Seville was tied going to the final hole, but bogeyed to finish second. "I was really proud of Annabelle for playing as well as she did," said Fischer of the senior. "I know she's probably kicking herself after hole No. 18, but I thought she played the hole well. That's the toughest hole on our golf course and she gave herself a chance to make par." Avery Thurston added an 86 for Edison while Leah Sharp carded an 88. Lilly Davis rounded out the scoring for the Chargers with a 102. Fischer liked the competition his team faced. Along with Division I schools Avon and Avon Lake, the event drew other big schools like Perrysburg, Rocky River, Olmsted Falls and Ashland. "This tournament has always been well-run," Fischer said. "I can't take credit for it. The golf course treats us really well. It's in great shape, so teams love coming here. For us to have that caliber of competition and for us to shoot like we did, I'm really proud." Perkins was fifth, shooting a 370. Despite a rough final few holes, Ireland Hart paced the Pirates with a 78, which was tied for fourth overall among individuals. "I thought today went really well for our team," Perkins coach Stephanie Dubois said. "I was very proud of the way my girls finished and worked hard through their first 18-hole tournament of the season." Aubrey Ransom backed her with a 93 and Maycee Bohn turned in a 96. Lucy Miller added a 103 for the Pirates. "Playing a bigger Invite like this right off of the bat gives us a look at our competition and ways we can improve," Dubois said. "Moving forward, I would like to see my girls build confidence and stay positive. I think working on our mental game will help the girls improve their scores. "We are already off to a great start and we just need to keep up the good work." Norwalk was another big school in attendance. The Truckers finished seventh with a 374, four shots behind Perkins. Adyson Lepley led Norwalk with a round of 84. "It was a great first outing for the girls to work out some nerves and iron a few things out," Truckers coach Kate Brutcher said. "We are ready to play in our first conference match tomorrow and see where stand when matched up with them." Catherine Beamer added a 92 for Norwalk while Emma Holbrook shot a 97. Allison Konik added a 102 for the Truckers. "Great competition motivates them and helps keep their head in the game," Brutcher said. "We have nine matches in the first two weeks of the season. I'm hoping to see great progress in all the opportunities in the next few weeks." Bellevue took 13th, finishing with a team score of 430. "Today really gave us an opportunity to see how tough our competition is this season and it is pushing us to work harder," Lady Red coach Morgan Jonckheere said. "We want to be paired with golfers that get us out of our comfort zones and this is not a division that is going to be handed to anyone. Everyone came to play today." Mariska Manning led Bellevue with a 98 while Taylor Waldrup shot a 108. Brookelynn Gilbert carded a 110 and Rhiannon Geringer tallied a 114 for the Lady Red. "Overall, I am very proud of how our girls handled themselves today," Jonckheere said. "There were some tough hazards on this course and each girl handled different situations with grace and patience. We're learning to get out of our heads and focus on the next shot." Huron finished 14th, shooting a 441. Lindsay Wainwright paced the Tigers with a round of 86 while Ashtyn Spooner carded an 89. "For us, it's our first event of the year, so we look at it as blowing the dust off," Huron coach Jeff Hippely said. "By the end of the first week or so, our scores should start coming down. "Lindsay Wainwright did, however, shoot her best 9-hole score ever, 41 on the front 9, and her best 18-hole score ever with the 86." Tori Cepac added a 129 and Julia Klinger shot a 137 to round out Huron's team scoring. "We have a packed early season," Hippely said. "Hopefully we'll get the putting dialed in better. Once we get some more practice time available, we're going to concentrate on putting which should bring our scores down. The overall outlook for the season is to get the scores down and at least be competitive in the conference and especially at sectionals." Vermilion was 15th, shooting a 469 as a team. Caroline Riddle paced the Sailors with a 98 while Colleen Traut carded a 105. Payton Buchs (125) and Madelyn Smith (141) also scored for Vermilion. "I like this tournament because in golf, we generally don't have much time to get up and running," Vermilion coach Jeff Olson said. "Having the Edison Invite so early in the season kind of shocks my girls into shape." St. Paul finished 16th in the 17-team field. Alia Bogard paced the Flyers with a 105. "This is our third day into the season, so we're still working out our struggles and trying to improve overall," St. Paul coach Kaitlynn Olak said. "We are headed in the right direction. We have quite a few returners this year, so we're excited to have them back." Annabelle Cooper added a 121 while Chai Ruffing carded a 130. "We're a young team and having some of these bigger schools here pushes us," Olak said. "It's takes us outside of our boundaries. We want to be better and it's a good thing to have bigger schools here." Eliza Rospert rounded out the Flyers' scoring with a 135. St. Paul was playing for the third day in a row. "We have a match Monday," Olak said. "The rest of this week we'll get some practice in and focus on our short game. That's the area we'd like to see improvement. We need to be dialed in a little more on those couple putts and chips. We're headed in the right direction." St. Mary Central Catholic shot a 531, led by Alexis Langenberg's 108. Lexi Herzog (129), Caelyn Blank (141) and Madisyn Puchalski (153) also scored for the Panthers. "I'm incredibly proud of our girls and the way they competed today," SMCC coach Gabby Buathier said. "This was our first 18-hole event of the season, and they stayed positive, supported one another, and battled through a challenging course against some very talented teams.
