Get lungs tested for cancer

PORT CLINTON — Saturday marked World Lung Cancer Day. "Since its inception in 2012, World Lung Cancer Day has been observed every year on Aug. 1 to raise awareness of lung cancer issues and magnify the need for more lung cancer research funding," according to a statement from the Lung Cancer Foundation of America. Locally, those at Magruder Hospital encouraged a certain age group to get tested. Those who could qualify for a screening would be someone who's: • Between the ages of 55 and 77 • Been a consistent and current smoker • Given up smoking within the past 15 years • Not showing any signs or symptoms of lung cancer "Talk to your primary care provider to set up a lung cancer screening counseling and shared decision-making visit," according to a hospital statement. "If screening is determined to be right for you, here's what to expect," it continued. "It is a low-dose chest CT scan that requires no prior preparation. The scan takes 15 to 20 minutes. Your primary care provider will call you with the results." By the numbers The Lung Cancer Foundation of America provided some information on lung cancer: • One in 16 people can expect a lung cancer diagnosis. • About one person every 2 minutes is diagnosed with lung cancer. • About one in five women diagnosed with lung cancer today were never smokers. • Every 4 minutes, someone in the U.S. dies of lung cancer. • Lung cancer killed an estimated 124,700 people in 2025, more than breast and prostate cancers combined. • During the past 39 years, lung cancer death rate trend has shown a 102% increase in women and 29% decrease in men.
