A great deal for Great Lakes Grinders fans

SANDUSKY — Customers can order massive mouthwatering sandwiches — such as turkey avocado, tomato basil and about a dozen other delicious combinations — from a lakefront sub shop for many more years.During a recent public meeting, all seven city commissioners supported a four-year lease extension for Ron Hile to continue operating his business, Great Lakes Grinders, from Shoreline Park through 2022. The previous three-year deal would have expired this fall."This is an easy one," commissioner Dick Brady said. "It's one of my favorite lunch stops. I'm thrilled he will be with us for another five years."Debuting in 2015, and open each year from mid-May through mid-September, Great Lakes Grinders offers supersize sandwiches stuffed with fresh produce, seasoned sliced meats, sharp cheeses and tangy sauces packed between thick pieces of artisan French baguettes. No other restaurant in Erie County serves these types of subs. Hile expressed excitement and enthusiasm for not only continuing but concocting new sandwich combinations."We are excited about the extension," said Hile, who employs a few staff members. He's also a teacher at Hancock Elementary School and coaches football for St. Mary Central Catholic."We've put a lot of effort into maintaining and improving Shoreline Park and being the kind of partner the city of Sandusky deserves," Hile said. "This extension highlights our mutually working relationship."Local officials wholeheartedly agree."Mr. Hile has been an outstanding lessee for the past three years, and the community has continued to respond to Great Lakes Grinders with nothing but positive and raving reviews," city recreation superintendent Victoria Schaefer said.
