Osborn MetroPark trail work starting soon

HURON TWP. — A project to vastly improve a popular walking trail should begin within the coming days. Earlier this week, Erie MetroParks officials gave an update about paving the Osborn MetroPark pathway in Huron Township. It's located off East Perkins Avenue near Cleveland Road (U.S. 6). Park officials previously finalized a $219,000 work order to pave the existing 1.2-mile, rectangular-shaped course encompassing the perimeter of this public greenspace. Rather than the gravel surface in place today, crews plan on laying down asphalt while also widening this path from 6 feet to 8 feet, making it handicap accessible and compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act regulations. For instance, they'll install a ramp with handrails in one section so those with wheelchairs can get through a small, gradual incline section. The work intends to retain the path's same distance and layout. Here's what people should know, as explained by a park district statement: • The enhancements: "Key improvements include widening and paving the path, installing a (handicap-accessible) accessibility ramp and creating a more welcoming environment for individuals of all abilities." • The reason: "These upgrades are part of the park district's response to a community-informed strategic plan released in early 2025." • The project timeline: "Construction on the perimeter path is expected to start in early August and be completed by Sept. 1, weather permitting." • The incremental nature: "During construction, portions of the looped trail will be temporarily closed or have limited access. But the Roger Johnson Nature Center and wooded trails will remain open to the public. Park visitors are encouraged to observe posted signage and use caution while work is underway." • The planned celebration: "Erie MetroParks officials are planning for a grand opening that coincides with the annual Osborn Fall Fest on Sept. 19. Once completed, the upgraded path will offer a smoother, more accessible surface, allowing individuals with mobility challenges, families with strollers and others to more easily enjoy the park." Many people, including park district executive director Melissa Price, are looking forward to the trail's transformation. "When Erie County residents asked for a (handicap) accessible pathway within our parks, we knew improving the pathway at Osborn would have the largest impact," Price said. "Osborn draws over 300,000 visitors annually and is in close proximity to the (The Meadows at Osborn Park, a) nursing home. We are excited to complete this project and provide a trail that is more accessible for everyone."
