Norwalk at Sandusky wrestling

SANDUSKY — Bricen Haar entered Wednesday's match against Norwalk without a win this season.He did not even take two minutes to pin Kyle McKay at 145 pounds after an early takedown.That highlight stood out to Sandusky coach Robert Sartor, as the Blue Streaks blitzed past Norwalk, 52-21, in the 2017 Odyssey matchup.Haar, who improved to 1-5 on the season, pinned McKay in 1:34."Bricen is a tall, lengthy kid who is not the strongest kid on the team," Sartor said. "He has struggled the last couple of years. To see him go out there that aggressive and have him pull out a win was real exciting."That pushed the Sandusky lead to 46-6, sealing the win for the Blue Streaks. Earlier, returning district qualifier Jerrell Wells (3-2) and Decaprio Amos (3-3) picked up wins at 220 and 285 pounds, respectively, to give Sandusky a quick 12-0 lead. At 106 pounds, Rico Cunningham (5-1) made easy work of Corbin Ott. Cunningham led 6-1 after one period and 12-1 after two periods. He added four more points to finish off the technical fall in 5:00."I thought our guys' conditioning looked really well and a lot better than last weekend," Sartor said. "We ask them each week to improve on things they did wrong the week before. There is room for growth."Josh Calderon (6-0) added a forfeit win at 113 pounds to increase the lead to 23-0. At 120 pounds, David Kesterson (1-0) scored a takedown of Trenton Goosetree before pinning the freshman in 1:01.The Truckers finally got on the board at 126 pounds. Returning district qualifier Carson Ott took down Anthony D'Amico before scoring a near-fall. Ott then finished off D'Amico in just 1:44 for the win."To wrestle under the lights takes a lot composure," Sartor said. "I think the guys handled it well and wrestled the way we asked them to."At 132 pounds, Elijah Hunter (5-1) dominated freshman Isaac Scheel for the Blue Streaks. Hunter nearly finished the match via pin in the first period, but led 13-2 after two minutes. A takedown and near-fall finished off the technical fall in 2:54 for Hunter."We were overwhelmed by their age and experience," Norwalk coach Frank Staley said. "Sandusky is an excellent team and then showed us what some time on the mat will do for you."Eian Sherman (5-1) registered a takedown on Olivier Maloney at 138 pounds before finishing the pin in just 36 seconds for Sandusky. After Haar's win at 145 pounds, Evan Stumpf took a forfeit win for Norwalk at 160 pounds.Ethan Hernandez, a returning state qualifier dominated Dyllon Pollard (2-4) at 170 pounds. Hernandez led, 6-0, after one period, added a takedown in the second period, and pinned Pollard at the 3:42 mark."I was pleased with three or four of our kids. I thought they competed well. Even some that lost competed well," Staley said. "It is early and we have a long way to go. We are going to push through and be ready by conference. We will see what happens."The last two matches of the night each went to decision. At 182 pounds, returning district qualifier Quay Brown (6-0) took a close, 5-2 win over Darion Smith. Then, Sam Hunter (3-2) won, 13-7 over Alec Maloney in a matchup of two returning district qualifiers."I thought Darion competed well even though he is normally at 160 pounds," Staley said. "195 pounds was a nice matchup of two kids that are ranked in the state, but I thought we could have done better in that match."Sartor is looking for the simple things are this point of the season."I want to see them wrestle for six minutes," Sartor said. "I want to see us not losing because of conditioning. I want to see our conditioning improving every week. I want to see mistakes being cleaned up. We showed that tonight."
