From battlefield to finish line

For Johnathan Joseph, crossing the finish line at the Ohio Ironman 70.3 won't simply mark the completion of a race: It will represent a journey that has taken him from the battlefields of Afghanistan through years of personal struggle and ultimately toward healing. The 34-year-old Marine Corps veteran will compete in his first half Ironman race this summer, taking on the swim, bike ride and half-marathon with a purpose that reaches far beyond athletic achievement. "I hope to do this for my kids," Joseph said. "I want to show them to never quit. They see how hard I'm training. I don't think they understand why I'm doing it, because they're still young, but I hope they'll be proud." Born in Russia, Joseph was adopted by an American family when he was five years old. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. In 2014, he deployed to Afghanistan with 12 Charlie Company, serving a little more than five months in country. Like many veterans, however, the darkest battle began after returning home. Personal struggles "There was a lot," Joseph said. "The biggest thing was drinking after getting back. I spiraled." As fellow veterans struggled after their service, several took their own lives. Joseph found himself fighting similar thoughts while turning to alcohol to cope with the invisible wounds of war. "I almost also took my life," he said. "I just kept drinking." The birth of his son in 2016 gave him a reason to keep moving forward, but it did not immediately end the struggle. For years, Joseph focused on supporting his growing family while continuing to rely on alcohol. Finding God "It wasn't until Veterans Day a few years ago that everything changed," he said. After what he describes as finding God, Joseph quit drinking altogether. He began attending church and Bible studies regularly. He sought therapy to address his post-traumatic stress disorder. The changes transformed his life. Then another opportunity appeared. A friend from high school, a fellow Marine who had gone on to complete marathons and Ironman races, offered to train anyone interested in distance running. Joseph accepted the challenge. Initially, his motivation had little to do with racing. "I was thinking of it as mentally getting out there, getting out of my own head," he said. The training was demanding, but the miles quickly became therapeutic. Preparing for the Pittsburgh Half Marathon introduced him to endurance racing and each finish line inspired him to tackle another challenge. "Just going out and running, I was able to clear my mind," Joseph said. "It takes away all the bad, negative thoughts I had. Drinking helped before. Being sober and going through it this way has been better physically and mentally for me." A new challenge Last October, Joseph completed the Marine Corps Marathon in the Arlington/Washington D.C. area, reaching his goal of finishing in three hours and thirty minutes. "It was a cool experience," Joseph said of competing in the 50th-annual event. His coach immediately suggested something even bigger: an Ironman race. Although other responsibilities interrupted his training over the winter, Joseph resumed his workouts several months ago with renewed determination. He thought about competing in the Happy Valley, Pennsylvania, event but realized he would not have enough time to train, so he began to focus on the race in Sandusky. He lives just three hours away in Pittsburgh. Competing in an Ironman race has been a personal goal. "I always thought it was cool physically and mentally," he said. "It'll be a cool experience." Joseph chose this Ironman, in part, because many people said it was a good one for beginners, because the bike course is mostly flat and the swim course is in a relatively protected body of water. The Kona, Hawaii Ironman's water course is in the open ocean. Today, every workout serves a larger purpose than preparing for race day. Joseph credits his coach and teammates with Victory Multisport as having helped him tremendously with his mental health because the support each member shows another helps all to achieve their goals. Daddy makes them proud Joseph hopes his six-year-old daughter, his 10-year-old son and others who hear his story will understand that perseverance can overcome even life's darkest moments. "The Marines taught me to never quit," he said. "No matter what your age is, no matter what your abilities are, never quit." When Joseph enters the water on race morning, he'll carry more than months of training. He'll carry the lessons learned through military service, recovery and fatherhood — proof that while some battles leave lasting scars, they can also lead to unexpected victories. For Joseph, becoming an Ironman isn't about earning a medal. It's about demonstrating that resilience, faith and determination can carry a person farther than they ever imagined.
