Locals check out library's new stairs

NORWALK — Many people celebrated a new chapter for a century-plus-old library. Those representing the Norwalk Public Library and local offices, including Norwalk's government, attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday. Among those in attendance: Norwalk Mayor Dave Light and state Rep. Kellie Deeter, R-Norwalk. This event revealed new steps leading up to the historic institution's front door coming from West Main Street. Closed for a few months, library staff eagerly looked forward to this day. The "reopening celebrates the restoration of the library's historic front entrance and welcomes the community back through the front doors," library director Stacey Church said. "We are excited to share this milestone with our patrons and invite everyone to stop in and sign up for (the summer reading program) if they have yet to do so." Church answered some additional questions about the stairs' reopening: Q: How long have the steps/front door been inaccessible? SC: The front steps and main entrance have been inaccessible since April 2026 while restoration work was completed on the historic staircase and exterior of the building. Q: Why has it been inaccessible? SC: The steps were closed as part of a larger preservation project focused on restoring the exterior of our historic 1905 Carnegie library. The front staircase required significant refurbishment, including resetting stair stones, replacing damaged stone and sealing the structure to ensure its long-term integrity and safety. Q: What type of work went into this initiative and how long has it taken? SC: This project was part of a comprehensive exterior restoration effort that began in September 2025. The work included: • Replacing damaged brick and stone • Tuck-pointing mortar joints • Installing new joint seals • Flashing to improve weather resistance • Cleaning and sealing the exterior • Repairing and painting window frames and architectural elements • Restoring the front entrance staircase The staircase portion of the project was completed this spring and early summer, although planning and exterior restoration efforts have been ongoing for more than a year. Q: How much did the work cost? How was it paid for? SC: The library board accepted a (roughly $331,000) bid from Quality Masonry of Marion, Ohio, for the exterior restoration project. The work was funded through a one-time $400,000 Strategic Community Investments Grant awarded by the state of Ohio. The grant covered the project without requiring local taxpayers to bear the cost. Q: How did people access the library in the meantime? Can they still access that alternative area? SC: Throughout the project, library services remained fully available. Patrons entered through our (handicap)-accessible entrance and the side entrance on Case Avenue. Both entrances remain available and will continue to provide convenient access to the building, particularly for individuals who require accessible entry. Q: What does the opening of the steps signify to the library and the community? SC: The reopening of the front steps is both a practical and symbolic milestone: It restores the historic main entrance to one of Norwalk's most recognizable buildings and marks the completion of an important preservation effort. For the library, it represents our commitment to maintaining a treasured community landmark while ensuring it remains safe and welcoming for future generations. For the community, it is an opportunity to, once again, enter through the same front doors that have welcomed residents for well over a century. History lesson Church also provided some context on the library: The Norwalk Public Library was built in 1905 as a Carnegie library through funding provided by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. For more than 120 years, it has served as a center for learning, literacy and community engagement. The building is one of Norwalk's most recognizable historic structures and remains an important architectural and cultural landmark in the community.
