CASTALIA — Based on Thursday's successful open house, the prognosis for a new community-based health center seems favorable. Many people, from local officials to area residents, checked out the new Margaretta School-Based Health Center. Recently debuting, this new facility — located at the former Margaretta Schools' board office, 305 S. Washington St. in Castalia — is designed to provide students, staff and the surrounding community with convenient access to high-quality health care. By placing medical services directly near a school, the health center — a partnership with the Erie County Community Health Center and Erie County Health Department — aims to: • Reduce barriers to care • Minimize the time students would otherwise spend away from the classroom • Support the overall well-being of the Polar Bear community "Opening this center at Margaretta is a major milestone in our mission to expand health care access throughout our region," said Troy Chaffin, CEO of the Erie County Community Health Center. "This partnership allows us to provide essential primary care and preventive services right where students spend the majority of their day, ensuring they have the support they need to thrive academically and personally." Health officials expect to receive reimbursements from Medicaid and insurance to ensure the center's long-term viability. Q: Will patients be able to afford care there? A: For patients worrying about costs, the health department has agreements with most private insurances as well as Medicare and Medicaid and offers a sliding fee scale for those without insurance coverage. At a recent event, all children who are on the twice-yearly dental schedule were found to have no cavities, highlighting the effectiveness of preventive care and the existing collaborative efforts. Officials representing Margaretta Schools underscored how they're fully committed to this initiative. Beyond staffing professionals at the center on South Washington Street, district officials intend to accommodate these frontline health care workers at the new school setting when it opens in early 2027. "The opportunity created by them, having a location in our district, will benefit our students, staff and the entire community.
