A fresh look for Platinum Razor Barbershop

SANDUSKY — The previous appearance of Matt Ridgeway's barbershop didn't line up with the elite-level services he provides to his clients. So the 1992 Sandusky High School graduate gave his business a complete makeover, completely transforming the look of his local building. Ridgeway recently debuted a fresh look for his shop: Platinum Razor Barbershop, 906 Columbus Ave., just south of downtown near East/West Park. "I remodeled it and put lights in here. I was cutting hair in the dark," said Ridgeway, who's operated out of this spot for four years. The state-licensed barber established Platinum Razor Barbershop back in 2014. "I finally saved up enough money to do some work," added Ridgeway, noting the job was completed by Matt Stookey of Handy Matt Trades. "I wanted to make it a more inviting space and make people feel more comfortable." This also included adding a second chair for a barber, whether a seasoned veteran or an aspiring apprentice, to work alongside him. "I want to give someone who will work hard an opportunity to come in here and cut hair," Ridgeway said. "They aren't just going to cut hair: They are going to get an education and learn how to cut hair the right way and make a decent living." Despite a new feel, Ridgeway didn't change up any of the services his loyal customers have come to expect. This consists of fades, drop fades, lineups, hot lather shaves and hair steamer treatments. "I love being able to take somebody and transform the way they look at themselves in the mirror," said Ridgeway, who works, in part, to support his two beloved French bulldogs: Abigail and Isabella. "It's a gift to be able to go out and make them feel better so that they have the confidence to be a better person in life." Ridgeway's revamp — now featuring a new bathroom, a dedicated office space and security upgrades — also signifies his long-term commitment to cutting hair in Sandusky. "I'm not going anywhere," said Ridgeway, who lives a life of recovery and credits cutting hair as a motivation to stay sober. "I'm locked in." Many people, including Norwalk resident Will McKnight, swear by his services. "He will get you right," said McKnight, who's been coming to Ridgeway for about three years now, opting for tapers. "I love his energy, and he is really good at cutting hair." Ridgeway does accept new clients. People can inquire by calling 419-271-6567. It's largely by appointment only but walk-ins are welcome. He operates on Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Ridgeway welcomes people to see him. "When people feel good, I feel good," Ridgeway said. "Cutting hair gives me purpose in life. When I hand someone the mirror and see that smile on their face, that is worth everything to me and more than any amount of money."
