Huron's Schmidt steps down as softball coach

HURON — Jude Schmidt has had time to reflect. The Huron softball coach has thought about where he sits personally and professionally right now. In the end, Schmidt decided it was time to move on, stepping down as the Tigers coach after seven seasons. "This was not an easy decision, but I felt the time was right," Schmidt said. "I came to the conclusion that this was the right moment to step away from the position. This decision wasn't driven by any one factor. Rather, it was a combination of feeling that the program is in a good place, being proud of what we've accomplished together and recognizing that sometimes leadership transitions can be healthy for both the individual and the program. "I believe the foundation is strong and I'm excited to see the continued success of Huron softball moving forward." Huron battled through the rugged Sandusky Bay Conference Bay Division this season, ultimately winning a pair of postseason games before a district final loss to Archbold on May 22. Schmidt said this decision was something he had been thinking about for some time. "I have spent considerable time reflecting on my future with the program and weighing a decision that has not come easily," Schmidt said. "After much thought and careful consideration, I decided to step down from the position. While this is a difficult decision, I believe the program is in a strong position to continue its success for many years to come. I am proud of the foundation that has been built and confident that the student-athletes and future coaching staff will continue to represent Huron with excellence. "At this point, it feels like the right time for both me and the program to move into the next chapter." Huron finished this season with a record of 12-10. In 2025, the Tigers were 15-10. "Jude knew it was time to step down," Huron athletic director Matt Ayers said. "He has a younger daughter that is starting high school softball at Perkins. He wants to be able to watch her. "It was not a surprise. We had conversations last year and this year regarding his future." Schmidt, who works in human resources at Revere Plastics System in Clyde, was coach for seven seasons, which included the cancelled 2020 season due to COVID. In that time, Huron had a record of 92-56. Under Schmidt's leadership, the Tigers appeared in three district title games, capturing the program's first-ever district title in 2023. Huron won three SBC titles in Schmidt's six years on the field. "During my time leading the program, we have experienced many memorable moments and achieved significant milestones together," Schmidt said. "I am incredibly proud of what our players, coaches and supporters accomplished. These accomplishments are a testament to the hard work, dedication and commitment of our student-athletes and coaching staff." Schmidt said his focus right now is coaching the Sandusky Bay Tornados, a 12U travel softball team that includes his daughter. "We have a great group of young athletes and I'm excited to continue working with them this summer and in the years ahead," Schmidt said. "More importantly, my daughter is part of that team and being able to spend that time with her and help develop those young players is where my energy and attention are focused right now. Coaching has always been about building relationships and helping young athletes grow and I still have that opportunity with this group. "As for coaching at the high school level again, I wouldn't rule anything out in the future. But at this point, my priority is my family, my daughter and the Sandusky Bay Tornados program." Whoever takes over for Huron will step into a good position. The Tigers graduated just one senior (Kaylee Albrycht) and return first-team all-league picks Lucy Hinners and Adelyn Van Sickle, as well as second-team selections Madison Holeman and Rylie Dehn. Ayers said the school plans to start interviews next week and have a coach hired before July. "I want to thank the administration, players, parents, fellow coaches and the entire Huron community for their support throughout my tenure," Schmidt said. "It has truly been a honor to be part of such an outstanding school district. I will always cherish the relationships, memories and accomplishments we shared together. "I wish Huron High School and the softball program nothing but continued success in the future."
