Memorial parade a roaring tribute

MONROEVILLE — A procession of yellow, orange and black motorcycles roared down U.S. 20 on Saturday, passing through Bellevue as part of a rolling tribute to a local motorcycling legend. The George Roeder Memorial Parade, a hallmark event of Ohio Bike Week, drew riders from across the region to honor the late George Roeder Sr. Bikers staged at Roder Racing from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. before kickstands went up at 3 p.m. for a police-escorted ride to the Downtown Block Party in Sandusky. For the Roeder family, the event remains deeply personal. George Roeder, whose father and namesake opened the Monroeville shop in 1972, now operates the business in tribute to his brother, Will. The parade serves as an annual celebration of their father's enduring legacy within the regional motorcycle community. Ensuring a safe journey for the massive procession is a top priority for law enforcement. Sgt. Wade Lewis of the Ohio State Highway Patrol's motorcycle unit — who was joined by patrol officers from across the state — helps lead the escort every year and emphasized the dual focus of the operation. "We are out here leading and protecting the community while ensuring the bike community has a safe ride," Lewis said. That visible, statewide police presence did not go unnoticed by attendees. John and Tina Smith have participated in the memorial ride for three years, though John has been an avid rider for 40 years. "It's great seeing the highway patrol protecting the children and the community," John Smith said. The event's family-friendly and deeply rooted atmosphere resonated with many. Angie McGrady, who grew up in bike culture, said she loves the camaraderie and energy the parade brings to the area. Before the ride began, the staging area at Roeder Racing served as a bustling hub for motorcycle enthusiasts to connect with industry vendors. Todd Rounds, representing CruzArmor, used the gathering as a platform for educating riders about motorcycle protection. "We get to show our products, and the local community is engaged," Rounds said, adding that he loves the welcoming nature of the area. As the rumble of engines faded toward Sandusky, the George Roeder Memorial Parade once again delivered on its promise: blending motorcycle heritage, community safety and a shared passion for the open road.
