Another great Bike Week

Two events annually seem to mark the start of the summer season in Sandusky — Cedar Point's opening day and Ohio Bike Week. Bike Week has brought many motorcyclists to the area this past week since May 29. It always seems to be a big success. As it wraps up on Saturday, we hope locals and out-of-town visitors enjoyed cruising on local streets, visiting local places and the rockin' music during the annual Block Party. Here's to a fun and safe weekend, everyone. Browsing for the Boys The masthead of the Shawangunk (N.Y.) Journal weekly newspaper should be familiar to any Sanduskian. Prominently featured is an image of The Boy with the Boot. The newspaper's home village of Ellenville, New York, like Sandusky, has two identical twin Boys. We know this because the Register received an unexpected visit this week from two Journal reporters working on a story to travel and track down as many of their Boys' twins as they could. Sandusky was their first stop. We spoke with them for several minutes about the Register, how we're navigating the ever-changing news industry and about the purpose of their visit. Register reporter Andy Ouriel then escorted the duo to Washington Park and Sandusky's Boy with the Boot, standing proud at the center of the fountain near the county courthouse. He also showed them the city's original Boy, which sits nearby inside Sandusky City Hall. Readers might recall a 2022 article in the Register about how Sandusky's iconic symbol is hardly a unique statue. There are at least 25 of them on display in public places as far west as California, as far south as Louisiana, as far east as Maine and even a few in the Great White North — Canada. So what's the story with these Boys, anyway? According to roadsideamerica.com, it's not agreed on what or who exactly the boy is supposed to represent, but they originated from the J.L. Mott Iron Works in New York, which began selling them in 1875. Obviously, Ellenville appreciates its Boy as much as Sandusky does, and we'd be curious to hear about the stories of more cities with the Boy with the Boot.
