Ohio battles shaped nation's future

Editor's note: This story appeared in a June special section to commemorate local history for America 250. They might not be as remembered or as historically significant as Normandy, Waterloo or Thermopylae. But Ohio can say it's home to a number of battle sites that were important moments in the westward expansion of the United States in its early days. Learn about the armed conflicts that took place locally here: The Battle of Fallen Timbers On the Aug. 20, 1794, Maj. Gen. Anthony Wayne led his Continental Army force to modern-day Maumee, Ohio to battle British and Native American groups in what would become the final battle of the Northwest Indian War. Maumee was home to a Native American stronghold, Fort Miamis, which was part of a larger project that hoped to establish an independent Native American state between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes in collaboration with British groups. Wayne and his army, joined by a Kentucky militia of over 1,000 troops, reached the Maumee River in August of 1794. Shawnee Chief Blue Jacket, who led Native American forces in the region, hoped to ambush Wayne's force at Fallen Timbers. The site was a clearing formed when a tornado had toppled hundreds of trees a few years earlier. The toppled trees provided excellent defense positions for his troops and did not offer clear fields of fire for the attackers. The battle began in the morning hours of Aug. 20, lasting only one hour. When Wayne realized his mounted troops would not be effective in the terrain, he ordered his army to charge with bayonets to flush the Native Americans out of their positions. This maneuver caught Chief Blue Jacket's troops off guard, forcing them to flee back to Fort Miamis. Not wanting to provoke war with the Americans, British troops would refuse to admit allied forces into the fort to stop Wayne's advancements. Within three months following the battle, a treaty was signed between the United States and Britain, where the British pledged to evacuate from Northwest Territory forts by 1796. The following year, Wayne negotiated the Treaty of Greenville with the Native Americans of the region, effectively opening Ohio to American settlers. Fort Stephenson helped hold the Ohio frontier Today, Birchard Public Library stands in the heart of Fremont, a quiet civic landmark built on ground tied to one of Ohio's most dramatic moments of the War of 1812. More than 200 years ago, the area around the library was part of Fort Stephenson, a small American post at Lower Sandusky. There, in August 1813, a 21-year-old commander named George Croghan faced a larger British force with about 160 men, one cannon and a choice that would define his life. The Battle of Fort Stephenson did not involve massive armies — it was a frontier fight at a modest fort. But its impact reached beyond the walls of the post. The American victory helped halt British pressure in northwest Ohio and became part of the larger campaign that led to Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's victory on Lake Erie just weeks later. Together, the two victories helped shift the war in the western Great Lakes. Where Birchard Library stands today Fort Stephenson stood in Lower Sandusky, now Fremont, near the Sandusky River. The location mattered because northwest Ohio was still a contested frontier during the War of 1812. British forces operating from Canada, Native allies connected to Tecumseh's confederacy and American troops under Gen. William Henry Harrison were all fighting for control of the region. The present-day Birchard Public Library site gives that history a local anchor. This is not just a story from a distant battlefield. It is tied to ground that remains part of daily life in Fremont. Local historian Mike Gilbert, who has spent years studying and presenting the story of Fort Stephenson, has described the battle as powerful because of the people behind it. Croghan was not an aging general looking back on a lifetime of command. He was a young officer under pressure, facing a larger force and trying to prove himself worthy of the military legacy around him. Croghan came from a family with deep ties to early American history. His relatives included George Rogers Clark, the Revolutionary War figure known for his role in the Old Northwest, and William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. At Fort Stephenson, that legacy was tested. Fort Stephenson: The stand at Lower Sandusky As British forces approached Lower Sandusky, Harrison ordered Croghan to abandon and destroy the fort if the British arrived in force with cannon and if a retreat could be made safely. Harrison's concern was practical. The fort was small, the garrison was limited and the surrounding area was dangerous. Croghan believed the order came too late to carry out. He also believed the fort could be held. In his famous reply, Croghan wrote that the garrison had determined to maintain the place, adding, "and, by heavens! we can." The British force, led by Gen. Henry Procter, included regular soldiers, while Native allies were present in the surrounding area. The exact numbers vary by source, and historians have long noted differences in the accounts. But the basic picture is clear: Croghan was outnumbered and had only one cannon. That cannon was Old Betsy. The British bombarded Fort Stephenson, but the shelling failed to force a surrender. Croghan, meanwhile, prepared for where he believed the main attack would come. The fort had been strengthened with a ditch, and Old Betsy was moved and hidden in position to fire into the likely path of the assault. When British troops advanced, they encountered the ditch and came under heavy fire. Without proper scaling equipment, the attack stalled near the fort. Then Old Betsy opened fire. The blast helped break the British assault. The Americans held the fort, and the British withdrew. Only one American soldier was killed, with several wounded. British casualties were much heavier, though the exact number differs depending on the account. The victory turned Croghan into a national hero and gave American forces a needed success at a dangerous moment in the war. Why it still matters More than two centuries later, the story remains visible in Fremont. The site of Fort Stephenson is now marked at and around Birchard Public Library, where the modern city sits on ground once defended during the War of 1812. The cannon Old Betsy remains one of the most recognizable reminders of the battle. For visitors, the site offers a direct connection between modern community life and national history. A person can stand near the library and imagine a much different scene: smoke, artillery, shouted orders and a young commander deciding whether to retreat or hold. That connection is especially meaningful as communities prepare for America 250, the nation's 250th anniversary. The commemoration is not only about the Revolutionary War or the founding generation. It is also an opportunity to revisit the places where the young nation struggled to survive, expand and define itself. In northwest Ohio, that history runs through forts, rivers, lake battles and communities that still carry the memory of what happened there. Fort Stephenson showed that a small American force could hold against a larger enemy at a critical moment. It reminds modern readers that national history was not only shaped in capitals and famous cities. It was also shaped in places like Fremont, along Lake Erie and across the Ohio frontier. At Fort Stephenson, Croghan chose to stay. Weeks later, Perry won the lake. More than two centuries later, both stories remain part of the ground, memory and identity of northern Ohio. Fort Ball stymied British advance During the War of 1812, northwest Ohio was under constant threat of invasion from the British army. To protect the area from British assault, General William Henry Harrison ordered a fortification of the region with a series of forts along the Sandusky and Maumee Rivers. One of those forts was built in what is now the city of Tiffin. Fort Ball served as a minor, yet strategically significant supply post and staging area during the war. It was named after Lt. Col. James Ball, whose troops began construction in July of 1813. The fort never saw armed combat during the three-year conflict. However, it played a notable role in repelling British and Native American advancements. In that same summer of 1813, British troops, led by Gen. Henry Proctor, began a siege of Fort Meigs, located along the Maumee River. Fort Ball provided assistance in warding off the vastly superior British army and protecting vital supply lines from the south. Despite having access to ever-flowing springs of pure water, disease began to take the lives of many of the soldiers stationed at the fort. When the war ended in 1815, the fort was abandoned. Today, Tiffin has an Ohio Historical Marker near where Fort Ball used to stand, and the general area is referred to as the Historical Fort Ball Neighborhood District.
