Editor's note: This story appeared in a June special section to commemorate local history for America 250. As Ohio joins the nationwide celebration of America's 250th anniversary, communities across the state are inviting residents and visitors to take part in a wide variety of events that honor the nation's history and Ohio's unique contributions. With events planned in all 88 counties throughout 2026, Ohioans can explore local history, celebrate community traditions and help commemorate this once-in-a-generation milestone. ERIE COUNTY Red, White, and Blue Hike July 1 2-3 p.m. Vermilion River Reservation, 51211 North Ridge Road, Vermilion Enjoy a hike through Bacon Woods as you search for red, white and blue colors in nature to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Trail is limestone-covered and about 1 mile in length. The trail may be muddy depending on the weather. Registration not required. Meet at the Walking Center by the Bacon Woods Trail. HURON COUNTY Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure June 20-27 940 Fair Road, Norwalk In June 2026, the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure (GOBA) will travel through north-central Ohio along the scenic Route 250 corridor. This weeklong event is expected to attract around 1,500 cyclists to four welcoming host communities: Norwalk, Shelby, Wooster and Ashland. Participants will experience the area's rich history, small-town charm, and lively summer events. Riders will begin at the Huron County Fairgrounds in Norwalk, discover Shelby's rich bicycle history and the Shelby Bicycle Museum, enjoy Wooster's vibrant downtown and scenic countryside, and conclude at Ashland's BalloonFest where colorful hot-air balloons light up the sky. OTTAWA COUNTY Declaration 250 Aug. 1-2 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Langram Road, Put-in-Bay While July 4, 1776, marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, it was on Aug. 2 that the majority of the 56 signers actually affixed their names to the document. Declaration 250, hosted by the Lake Erie Heritage Foundation, will showcase tall ships, living history performances, keynote speakers and community leaders from across the country. The event will be emceed by nationally syndicated radio host Hugh Hewitt, and the Ohio State University Marching Band will perform. All members of the United States Congress will be invited to sign the ceremonial 250th-anniversary Declaration of Independence. The event will culminate with a fireworks display. Great Lakes Rockabilly Road Trip Music Festival Aug. 1 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. 112 Monroe St., Port Clinton Celebrate America's musical roots on Lake Erie's shores at the Great Lakes Rockabilly Road Trip, part of the nationwide America 250 commemoration marking the United States' 250th anniversary. Located in historic downtown Port Clinton, Ohio, this lively festival celebrates rockabilly, a key American musical style that combines early rock 'n' roll, country and rhythm & blues. The event will feature nationally touring artists, regional bands, classic cars, vintage fashion, and a lively community scene that honors the creativity and spirit behind American music. Visitors can experience live performances across multiple stages, a vintage pin-up pageant, classic car displays, local food vendors and the lively downtown waterfront setting that makes Port Clinton a gateway to Lake Erie and the Great Lakes. SENECA COUNTY 1776 Patriotic Home Decorating Contest in Green Springs June 1 to July 1 Green Springs residents are encouraged to show their community spirit by participating in the 1776 Patriotic Home Decorating Contest. In celebration of America's 250th anniversary, residents are invited to deck out their homes in red, white and blue. Showcase your most creative patriotic displays for a chance to win and help transform the village into a sea of stars and stripes. The event is free to the public. Fourth of July Celebration July 4 9 a.m. to fireworks at dusk Hedges-Boyer Park, 491 Coe St., Tiffin Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival Parade with America 250-themed float contest Sept. 19 10 a.m. Hedges-Boyer Park, 491 Coe St., Tiffin Heritage Day Sept. 19 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. During the Tiffin-Seneca Heritage Festival, Seneca County Museum, 28 Clay St. The Seneca County Museum will host an open house during this day of the Heritage Festival. 100th anniversary of the dedication of Frost Park and the unveiling of the Indian Maiden Statue Oct. 11 2:30 p.m. Seneca County Museum, 28 Clay St. HANCOCK COUNTY Unveiling a new Ohio Historical Marker June 9 Noon to 1 p.m. Hancock County Courthouse, 300 S. Main St., Findlay The new historical marker honors journalist and satirist David Ross Locke and his nationally influential Nasby Letters. The event is sponsored by the Hancock Historical Museum, Ohio History Connection, Findlay-Hancock County Alliance, America 250-Ohio and Hancock County Commissioners' Office. Best known by his pen name "Petroleum V. Nasby," Locke became popular during the Civil War through a series of satirical letters written from the perspective of a fictional Copperhead character. First published in 1861 while Locke served as editor and owner of the Findlay Jeffersonian, the Nasby Letters mocked pro-Confederate sentiment, strengthened Union morale, and became admired by readers across the country — including President Abraham Lincoln, who called them essential reading during difficult times. The ceremony is free and open to the public. This project was funded and supported by the Barbara & Edwin Heminger Memorial Fund. Celebratory Mural June 17 5 p.m. Brucklacher Memorial Park/Little Red Schoolhouse property, 8884 County Road 236, Findlay The Hancock Historical Museum (in collaboration with the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, Visit Findlay and Awakening Minds Art) is painting a mural to celebrate the legacy of Hancock County at their property. Findlay Young Professionals be helping with the painting. Drone Show following the Bluffton Lion's Club Festival of Wheels June 19 10 p.m. Harmon Field, Bluffton High School's football field, 125 E. College Ave., Bluffton The event will consist of 100 computer-synchronized areodrones (UAVs) creating colorful light formations and 3D pictures in the sky. Arcadia Fourth of July Celebration June 28 3-10 p.m. This free event will feature music and entertainment, food trucks, treats, games and family activities. A grand fireworks show will begin at 10 p.m. at the Arcadia Park, 301 Brown Road. Lighting Up the Sky, the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Show July 3 10 p.m. Hancock County Fairgrounds, 1017 E. Sandusky St., Findlay At 4 p.m., prior to the fireworks show, children's activities, live music, food vendors and more will be available. Findlay Fourth of July Parade July 4 11 a.m. It begins on South Main Street at the intersection of Baldwin Avenue, then travels north and ends at the Hancock County Veterans Memorial, at the intersection of West Main Cross Street (Ohio 12) and Dorney Plaza, by the Hancock County Courthouse. 4th of July Ice Cream Social July 4 Noon to 2 p.m. The Hancock Historical Museum, 422 W. Sandusky St., Findlay Celebrate America 250 with an old-fashioned ice cream social. The Hancock Historical Museum is an easy walk from the Main Street parade route, and the museum will be open with free, family-friendly activities. Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream scoops are available to purchase for $3, ice cream bars for $3, and root beer floats for $5. Show your America 250 pride with a commemorative mug for $5, or add a root beer float for $10. Independence Celebration July 4 6:30 p.m. to fireworks at dusk Foundation Park, 1225 S. Union St., Fostoria Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive July 14 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive will be displayed at Norfolk Southern Fostoria Automotive Distribution Center. Fostoria Heritage Day July 25 All day Main Street, Fostoria Family Night: Cooking Up History July 9 6-7:30 p.m. Hancock Historical Museum, 422 W. Sandusky St., Findlay Learn how food was grown and cooked in the past through hearth cooking in the Crawford Log Cabin and antique farm equipment and machinery in the Agricultural Center. There will also be a victory garden craft to create. The event is free and open to all ages. Registration is encouraged. The program is a partnership between the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library and the museum and is a part of the America 250-Ohio series. 2026 Benton Ridge Annual Halloween Parade — Red, White & BOO Oct. 24 4-8 p.m. Main Street, downtown Benton Ridge Guests can expect an unforgettable small-town celebration that blends patriotic pride, family fun and Halloween excitement into a one-of-a-kind community experience. The event kicks off with the annual Red, White & Boo Parade through downtown Benton Ridge, featuring decorated floats, costumes, local organizations, classic vehicles, music and themed entries celebrating both America and Halloween. After the parade, families can partake in the Patriotic Pumpkin Social at the park, which offers inflatables, train rides, games, food, music, costume contests and activities suitable for all ages. Main Street and the park will be vibrant with red, white, and blue decorations, paired with festive fall and Halloween themes. HARDIN COUNTY Patriotic Pops Concert June 28 7:30 p.m. Ada Exempted Village Schools, 725 W. North Ave., Ada The event will offer an evening of music, community pride and celebration to the school grounds. The concert is free and open to the public.The Lima Symphony Orchestra will perform under the direction of conductor Lloyd Butler. Attendees can expect a variety of musical selections including patriotic favorites such as the Armed Forces Salute honoring those who have served in the military and "Hang on Sloopy" along with selections by Broadway and popular movie soundtracks. The outdoor concert will feature open lawn seating. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. The performance will last approximately 90 minutes and include an intermission. Food trucks will also be on-site. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved indoors to the high school gymnasium. WYANDOT COUNTY "Walk in 1776" July 2 5-7 p.m. North and South Sandusky streets and Wyandot Avenue, Upper Sandusky The city will be taking the time to "Walk in 1776" with authentic food, crafts of the day, period costume judging and folk music on the courthouse sidewalks. Wyanstock 2026 July 3-4 Wyandot County Fairgrounds, 10171 Ohio 53, Upper Sandusky This event offers a taste of area live music, foods, craft brews, wines and arts. Wyanstock offers two days of continuous live music on two stages, and options for camping both nights.
