A terrific Torch Run

PERKINS TWP. — Many locals participated in the area's Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Ohio, organized, in part, by Perkins police. "Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, donated and came out to cheer on our runners and athletes," according to a department statement. "Your support and enthusiasm made the event a huge success and truly showed the strength of our community." This event "is a volunteer movement that was established by members of the law enforcement community to support (the) Special Olympics," according to an event statement. "Each year, officers carry the Flame of Hope along with athletes into the Summer Games opening ceremonies at The Ohio State University. The flame symbolizes courage, perseverance and the inclusion movement taking place in Ohio and across the globe." The local event, which occurred on Wednesday and involved participants running, biking or walking a 1.5-mile course, started and ended at Perkins High School. All proceeds raised from the event benefit the Special Olympics. Many others helped out in the local event, including the Erie County Sheriff's Office, Sandusky police, Chick-fil-A Sandusky, Drug Mart, Walmart, Perkins Schools, Perkins fire, Strawberry Cow and Guess Who Taco Truck. "Thank you for helping support inclusion, opportunity and the amazing athletes who inspire us all every day," according to a department statement, noting this local event raised close to $1,000. "We couldn't have done it without you."
