Tourism tax dollars can benefit local projects

PERKINS TWP. — The Erie County commissioners recently announced the adoption and execution of a funding agreement between their board and the Economic Development, Public Safety, Infrastructure and Community Conventions and Visitors Bureau for the funding of the third and fourth percentage points of the net revenue of the lodging tax. As a result of legislative changes supported by state Sen. Theresa Gavarone, R-Bowling Green, counties can utilize the lodging tax to strategically invest in projects that strengthen the area's economy, public safety and infrastructure. This ensures that the benefits of tourism extend to residents, businesses, local governments and tourists alike. Through thoughtful stewardship of public resources, the commissioners' visitors bureau will oversee the administration of the funds to advance high-impact projects that improve visitor experience in Erie County while delivering lasting community value. In its next steps as an organization, the commissioners' visitors bureau will be opening up its grant application to community stakeholders in Erie County. Applications may request funding for up to $100,000 per project. Serving as the point of contact for the commissioners' visitors bureau is Anna James, the county's community outreach coordinator, who will work with the board to coordinate visitors bureau activities. "We're excited to welcome Anna to the team and look forward to the energy and perspective she brings to (the commissioners' visitors bureau) work across Erie County," said Caleb Stidham, the chairman of this board. "Her strong academic background and commitment to public service will be a tremendous asset as we continue building partnerships and supporting impactful community projects." Projects eligible for consideration include those that: • Support tourism and resident-driven economic growth • Improve public infrastructure and enhance visitor experience • Enhance safety for residents and visitors in tourism areas • Strengthen the overall quality of life in Erie County Grant applications and program guidelines can be found at 2900 Columbus Ave., Sandusky.
