St. Paul tops Edison in district tuneup

NORWALK — A pair of top-10 ranked teams in the final Ohio High School State Coaches Association poll met for a second time in a district semifinal tuneup for both teams Tuesday as St. Paul topped Edison 8-5 at Norwalk Area Contractors Park. The Flyers (21-3-1) finished ranked No. 3 in Division VII, while the Chargers (17-6) ended at No. 9 in Division V. In the win, St. Paul's top three pitchers — Alex Marsh, Izaac Snyder and Nate Griffin — each got an inning of work. Grant Coriell pitched the final four innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks to pick up the win. At the plate, Marsh was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI while Snyder was 2 for 4 with two RBI. River Couch also added two hits and scored a run while Landon Fries doubled with a RBI. For Edison, Bryson Wittmer was 2 for 4 with a three-run home run. Chaz Smith singled with two RBI and Cole Leimeister also added a base hit. Owen Price, Evan Schnittker and Elijah Ruck combined to strike out 11 for Edison over six innings. On Thursday, the Chargers take on Huron (14-10) for a third time this season in a district semifinal at Fremont Ross. Edison has lost three of its last five against a tough late-season schedule after putting together a 12-game winning streak. St. Paul, which has won five straight, faces St. Mary Central Catholic (16-7) in a district semifinal at Lions Park in Castalia. Both games are scheduled for 2 p.m. starts.
