TRACK: Clyde's Chrisman qualifes for state in four events

LEXINGTON — Clyde's Damarius Chrisman won an individual event and anchored a winning relay at the Region 6 Division II track & field finals Saturday. Chrisman finished first in the 400 meters in 48.45, edging Bluffton's Kain Wright (48.83) at the finish line. Chrisman also anchored the winning 4x400 relay, which was timed in 3:20.77. Hector Garza led off for the Fliers while Dekin Crockett and Hayden Rex handled the middle legs. Crockett won the 300 hurdles in 38.19 while Chrisman, a senior, also qualified for state in the 100, finishing third in 11.07. Garza, Crockett, Cayden Perkins and Chrisman teamed up to finished second in the 4x200 relay in 1:27.76. The top four finishers at the regional level, plus at-large qualifiers, move on to the state finals Friday and Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. Perkins senior Owen Stewart won the boys 110-meter hurdles to deliver another area regional highlight. Stewart finished the finals in 14.65 seconds. Ontario's Aiden Fox finished second in 14.94. Stewart placed second in last week's prelims in 14.83. Perkins' Joel Smelcer took fourth in the 3200 finals in 11:06.83. Port Clinton's Michaela Stork was the only girls individual winner from the area. Stork, a junior, won the discus with a toss of 138 feet, 11 inches. The winning effort came on her second attempt. Stork had two other tosses that would have won the event. Perkins' 4x400 relay placed second in 3:58.58. Setting a school record for the Pirates were Camryn VanVlerah, Caitlin Frankfather, Belle Smith and Alex Merriman. Ontario won the 4x400 with a regional record time of 3:54.86. The girls 4x200 relays from Bellevue and Huron will head to state after finishing third and fifth, respectively, in Lexington. Bellevue's quartet of Katelyn Turner, Brooke Brown, Hallie McCarthy and Amerie Wagner took third in 1:43.94. Huron's Sasha Fry, Megan Harkelroad, Kate Ryan and Elliana Cozzie finished in 1:45.51 — the second-fastest time in school history — to gain at at-large berth to state. Huron's Sam Lesnak placed fourth in the 1600 in 5:05.00, edging the fifth-place finisher by less than a second. Huron's Rylie Towns took fourth in the 3200 in 11:10. Port Clinton's Morgan Wiechman placed fifth in 11:12.14 to secure an at-large state bid. Bellevue's Natalie Littlejohn placed third in the long jump with a 16-6.75 on her sixth and final attempt. Port Clinton's Alexis Shelton finished fifth in 200 in 25.44 and will head to state as an at-large entrant. Clyde's boys finished fourth in the team scoring with 48 points. Perkins' girls finished seventh with 26 points. PC tied for 10th with 24.
